The God of the Wounded

Just sayin’.

I love this patch. Best dollar I ever spent!

I want to talk about the Jesus I know.

Dude, I’ll tell ya—one time, I decided to vent a solid portion of my life story onto Reddit, and I literally got accused of making it up. One person said, basically, “I hope this is a creative writing project.” 😂

I ended up having to delete that account.

But over and over again, I have had terrible encounters with people who have simply not seen me as a person.

And one day recently, I was feeling so broken, so lost, and wondering if I can ever get better. I’ve been doing everything in my power to heal, and it seems like I’ll level up only to fall through the floor. Post-traumatic stress disorder isn’t something you just “get over”, your nervous system is literally stuck, and so pushing it to process the traumatic experiences in order to move past them, is actually an extremely painful process. There are times where it can feel very lonely, because, well… your life sounds like a creative writing project.

And on this day, I read this in Mark 15. Jesus has been handed over to soldiers to be beaten. And it reads:

“And the soldiers led him away into the hall … and they call together the whole band. And they clothed him with purple, and plaited a crown of thorns, and put it about his head ….

“And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him …

“And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.”

I burst into tears.

Cruxifixction was all about humiliation. You are stripped down and nailed to a cross and hung in the air to suffer and slowly suffocate while people walk by.

I realized—these people are not treating Jesus as a person. He knows, personally, what it is like to be dehumanized, and to be tortured, and humiliated.

Jesus is a God of the wounded, of the victims.

In His life, who did He go to? He went to the wounded.

He went to the outcasts. He went to the poor. He went to a man possessed, and healed him so he was in his right mind. He treated women as equals, and said children are the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven.

He is a God of the wounded.
