Every year, I feel it is so fitting that we celebrate the birth of Jesus in the winter—when for so many, the nights are long, the world is cold, and the ground is frozen.
But as I watched the meteor shower with my little family this last December 13th, I also noticed how exceptionally bright the stars seem to be this time of year.
In my darkest moments, my Savior has found me. As I look back over my life, I can see how He was always there with me in the unending darkness, in the cold, trodding across frozen ground, even when I thought He wasn’t.
In the moments in my life where I have fallen, overwhelmed with pain, He has caught me. When I have been betrayed or let down, He has caught me. When I couldn’t take anymore, He has caught me. When I have taken a wrong turn, He has caught me. When my world has gone up in flames all around me, He has rescued me from the fire, and helped me grow something beautiful from the ashes. When I have been as a child, crying out in fear, sorrow, or pain in the middle of the night, He has been the light piercing the dark room as the door opens, rushing to my rescue, carrying me out. And He’ll do the same for you.
Because that’s who He is.
He is the stars in the dark sky. He is the sun, ending the night. He is a God of Hope, a God of Perfect Love, a God of Compassion and Empathy, a God of Peace, a God of Joy, a God of Justice and Mercy. He is the Lord of Lights.
Tamara W. Runia said, “Jesus Christ gives light to those who sit in darkness…. Bathed in His light, you’ll see people all around you who have felt alone too, but now, with the light on, you and they will wonder, ‘Why were we so afraid in the dark? And why did we stay there so long?’
“‘May the Lord of Lights wrap you in His arms and console and love you continually.’”
