Rattle the Stars

Alright, alright. I’m not done scribbling through the printed draft, but I am much closer to done! This is why I like having goals—having them helps me push a little harder when difficulty hits (and things got difficult for a bit there). So, even if I don’t quite hit it, I’m still so much closer to where I want to be.

Years ago, I was driving on the freeway and it hit me—our futures are perfectly unwritten. I was observing the movement of my car hurtling us through the traffic, and thought of how interesting it was that my life was being woven like a thread through space and time right at that moment. And although I was clearly moving forward through it right then, it was not a guarantee that I would reach that next point right in front of me. Someone could cut me off, I could decide to change lanes and exit, I could get hit by another car, a storm could hit and force me to slow down or pull over until it passes. Any second, things could change.

So it is with life itself. The future has yet to be created. Its creation relies heavily on the choices that we make RIGHT NOW, even when we are thrown off course for a moment or have to slow down. We don’t have control of the things that hit us.

But we do have control over how we choose to move forward. I know—I know—that’s so much easier to say than to believe. But it’s true. Don’t let storms steal your hope away.

You are weaving your own thread through the grand tapestry of space and time. It’s all up to you how fulfilling the sight of your finished work is at the end.

I love the movie Treasure Planet. I was so happy when my boys got obsessed with it for a bit. I love what John Silver says: “You got the makings of greatness in you. But you got to take the helm and chart your own course! Stick to it, no matter the squalls! …. You’re gonna rattle the stars.”

Chart your own course, and stick to it. Even if you get thrown off, even if you’re forced to slow down—stick to it. Because one day, you’re gonna rattle the stars.
